The 200-unit protected ceiling
200 units is the single most important threshold in the LESCO residential tariff. Stay at or below it for 6 consecutive months and you keep the subsidised protected slab plus a full GST exemption. Cross it — even by one unit — and the entire connection is shifted to the non-protected tariff from the next bill, GST reappears at 18%, and every slab jumps to the higher price band. A 200 units electricity bill is therefore the maximum a protected household can consume without losing the subsidy.
What lands you at exactly 200 units
A typical 200-unit LESCO household has: 8–10 LED bulbs used 5 hours a day, one refrigerator, three ceiling fans running during summer daylight, an LED TV for 4–5 hours and light washing-machine use two or three times a week. Tips to hold the 200-unit line
- Keep a 15–20 unit buffer. Read the meter around day 20 of the cycle; if you are past 170 units, pause the AC or iron for the last days.
- Plan for June–August. One summer month over 200 costs you protected status for the next six bills, so budget AC hours before the heat peaks.
- Move water heating off electricity. An immersion rod or electric geyser can add 40–60 units a month on its own.
